New study shows global POD bases improve wind wake modeling
BRIEF NEWS
A new scientific publication by Technical University of Denmark support the development of efficient models for wind turbine wakes
The latest paper by DTU Wind Energy, “Convergence and efficiency of global bases using proper orthogonal decomposition for capturing wind turbine wake aerodynamics” addresses the challenges of modeling wind turbine wake aerodynamics, inherently complex and chaotic.
The research was conducted as part of the MERIDIONAL project and explores how global Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) bases can improve the modeling of wind turbine wakes in large wind farms. POD is a technique that yields an optimal set of spatial modes to capture the dominant flow structures and reconstruct the turbulent wake using reduced-order models (ROMs).
While traditional POD approaches are limited by their case-specific nature, this research introduces a global POD basis constructed from multiple flow scenarios. The analysis demonstrates that global POD bases significantly reduce reconstruction error across varying operating conditions, with low sensitivity to the specific datasets included.
The achievement of such results contribute to more accurate and interpretable modeling, supporting MERIDIONAL’s goal of enhancing the performance and design of next-generation renewable energy systems.
