International recognition for one of our researchers: EAWE PhD Award won at WESC 2025

BRIEF NEWS

A PhD working within MERIDIONAL receives top honours in Nantes for his doctoral work on Airborne Wind Energy, marking a first for both MERIDIONAL and Politecnico di Milano

Filippo Trevisi, active in the field of Airborne Wind Energy and involved in the MERIDIONAL project, has been awarded the 2025 PhD Award by the European Academy of Wind Energy (EAWE) for his doctoral thesis titled “Conceptual Design of Windplanes”. The award was officially presented last week during the Wind Energy Science Conference (WESC), held in Nantes, France.ù

This recognition represents a significant milestone, as it marks the first time the award has been granted to a thesis in the field of Airborne Wind Energy, and also the first time it has been awarded to a candidate from an Italian university, the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI).

Filippo’s thesis was acknowledged for its original and impactful contributions to the conceptual design, control strategies, and flight stability of AWE systems—research topics that are closely aligned with MERIDIONAL’s mission to advance sustainable and innovative wind energy technologies in Europe.

This achievement not only highlights the excellence of the scientific work carried out within the project but also reinforces the relevance of Airborne Wind Energy as a growing area of interest in the global wind energy research landscape.
