MERIDIONAL Highlights Wind Energy Innovation for Global Wind Day 2026
BRIEF NEWS
MERIDIONAL joins a social media campaing to highlight the relevance of wind energy research
As Europe celebrates Global Wind Day on 15 June, the Horizon Europe project MERIDIONAL is helping showcase how research and innovation are driving the future of wind energy across the continent.
The campaign, launched under the hashtag #EUWindFuture, brings together several European wind energy initiatives, including DTWO, SUDOCO and TAILWIND, to highlight the sector’s contribution to Europe’s clean energy transition. The initiative follows a landmark achievement reported by Ember’s European Electricity Review 2026: for the first time, wind and solar generated more electricity in the EU than fossil fuels during 2025.
MERIDIONAL is contributing to this momentum through the development of an advanced knowledge and toolchain ecosystem for aerodynamic design and wind flow modelling. At the heart of the project are WindLab, a knowledge and data hub, and TopDesign, an integrated toolchain that transforms research insights into practical design workflows. The project is also supporting innovation beyond research, with spin-off activities such as Ventoplani, a start-up exploring small-scale airborne wind energy systems for local energy generation.
Together with other European projects working on offshore wind digital twins, AI-powered wind farm operations and sustainable floating wind technologies, MERIDIONAL demonstrates how collaborative research is helping to build a cleaner, more resilient and energy-secure future for Europe.
