“Refining the airborne wind energy system power equations”

BRIEF NEWS

New scientific paper released by the Polytechnic University of Milan shows the power potential of two airborne systems moving with a circular trajectory.

“Refining the airborne wind energy system power equations with a vortex wake model” is the new scientific paper released by the Polytechnic University of Milan.

The study focuses on the power potential of two airborne wind energy systems (Ground-Gen and Fly-Gen) flying in circular trajectories. The power equations of both were refined to include the contribution from the aerodynamic wake, modeled with vortex methods.

Ground-Gen and Fly-Gen systems with the same idealized characteristics were then compared in terms of power production.

As a result, Ground-Gen was found to have a lower power potential than Fly-Gen. This is due to the reel-out velocity that makes Ground-Gen fly closer to their own wake.
